Hiking the Sella del Diavolo

The Sella del Diavolo (Devil’s Saddle) is a promontory with an unmistakable profile, a golden limestone monolith nestled between the city and Poetto beach. According to legend, it is the saddle of Lucifer, unseated by the archangel Michael during a battle between angels and devils for possession of the Golfo degli Angeli (Gulf of Angels). It is a jewel of history and nature that preserves a living ecosystem, spectacular views and hidden coves with emerald waters, together with traces of ancient peoples and recent history. On this hike, you will discover the remains of an 18th-century fort, the imposing Aragonese lighthouse tower, paths through the Mediterranean scrubland, the small tower that gave its name to the beach, and some of the most beautiful views of the coast. Please remember to wear sturdy shoes and to bring water and sunscreen, as you’ll be walking in full sun with intense light reflecting off the sea and limestone.
